End Tax Raise

A main issue as previously presented is the Tallahassee local government raising property taxes by 8.5%. This would directly impact college students looking for housing by encouraging landlords to continue to up the price of rent. Housing at its current state already isn't affordable, but this further increase would have drastic effects on any renters in the Tallahassee area. I believe the best way forward is to end the proposed property tax raise and instead cut areas that are not as relevant for the people of Tallahassee, such as luxury travel.

Subsize New Housing Developments for Students

When I travel around Tallahassee, especially near FSU's campus, I see the opportunity to build more housing developments. If the supply of housing increased in Florida's capital, the price of rent would significantly fall. The issue is, there is a lack of incentive for independent contractors to want to come to Tallahassee. An example of this is the increasing property taxes, which discourages entrepreneurs from moving in and setting up shop. I propose the local government assist these people with a subsidy or a promise of low-interest rates. In Canada, this was effective in solving existing housing shortages and colleges and universities, I believe imploring the same method would be effective.

Spread Awareness of the Issue

A main issue concerning this housing crisis is a general lack of awareness in the public. If more locals knew of this issue, they would be willing to demand the local government to find another solution that wouldn't place additional stress on students. Furthermore, this tax raise will affect the regular citizens in Tallahassee more than the commissioners think. Awareness coupled with my two previously offered solutions will create the best future for FSU students as well as residents of Tallahassee.
